Burger Champ

Come chomp on a champ

Burger Champ

We've mentioned before how much the Portuguese pride themselves on their hamburgers. And whether it's a pub in the centre of town, or a student hang out by IST University, there's burgers for every taste and price point across the city. And the latest contender, Burger Champ, caught our eye, nestled as it is between two of our favourite Portuguese restaurants, in the ever impressive gastronomy of Campo Pequeno.

One of the appeals of Burger Champ is it's covered outdoor dining area, so on the most recent public holiday (Assumption of Mary), we strolled over to enjoy a patty and sun.

With a sensible menu of around 10 burgers to choose from, the eye is initially drawn to the Glamorous Burger, given that they claim international beat maker The Weeknd has called it the best burger in the world. Treating that spin with a healthy dose of scepticism, we plumped for the Gourmet and Double Grill burgers.

The Gourmet is a hefty slab of heifer, slathered in a gorgonzola cheese, caramelised red onion, rocket (arugula for the non-British) and a punchy truffle mayo. This is a sandwich which absolutely lives up to its name. The glistening cheese melting over the 160 grams of Black Angus beef to create a really juicy boy burger.

The Double Grill delivers an equally unctuous molten cheese slap, with two 100g patties fused together with the most base of cheddar cheeses, crispy onions and an outrageously well thought through slice of dehydrated Patanegra ham, adding a smokey kick to really elevate the occasion. Both burgers were served in soft brioche buns, which just about managed to hold together under the weight of deliciousness.

You really should be adding Campo Pequeno to any food tour of Lisbon, and if a burger is what you're looking for, go knock yourself out at Burger Champ

Drinks: One glass of white wine and a Coke Zero.

Don’t forget to order: The Gourmet probably edges this fight on points in the final round.
