The stairway to a spicy, noodle broth heaven

Cheap Chinese food is my passion. It's a cuisine which absolutely does not necessarily improve with price. Don't get us wrong, done well at the high end it is a transcendental experience. We know this having witnessed multiple diners lose their composure and start gumming the leftovers of the famed Peking duck from Hong Kong institution Duddell's. That said, everyday Chinese food, with its heavy focus on salt and spice to be mopped up with a hearty portion of noodles or rice sustains almost a fifth of the worlds population, thus is statistically proven to be great.

Ambling around the Martim Moniz neighbourhood having grabbed a few at home bits from one of the many Asian food supermarkets of the area, we stumbled across Da Wanmian, an incredibly uninviting front door which appears to lead into someone's house. However experience in these matters meant we knew to ignore our eyes and instead follow our noses.

Which is just as well, as we came in a tiny Chinese lady was furiously chopping greens in what was the dining area of the large room they had set-up their restaurant. Being a cold day we went straight in for the first item on the menu, the pork rib noodle soup. Just €7 at the time of writing, this luscious broth came filled with chunky noodles and beansprouts and a ludicrously tender chunk of pork rib, marinated in five spice. This heavenly bowl of soup was one of the most enjoyable dishes Lisbon has to offer.

In a first for this blog, we strongly insist you visit Da Wanmian, if for no other reason than the very enjoyable DIY service situation they've implemented. But also really for the food. We will be returning to try out basically every dish they have to offer.

Don’t forget to order: Soups in the cold, soups in the hot. Good soup.
