Mãe Restaurante - Cozinha com amor

Mãe is in our neighbourhood and everytime we walk past we comment on its outside decking, handwritten chalkboard menu, and lovely looking bar and decor. Having finally eaten there, it did not disappoint. The restaurant does traditional Portuguese dishes but with a high-end twist. The starter of braised pork cheek was a scrummy, sticky, meaty plate of yum - the portions are big so you can definitely share. For mains we went for the steak and their take on a classic bacalhau a brás (codfish with scrambled egg and potato) - both cooked to perfection and utterly delicious. The night we were there every table was full of big groups, and the vibe was casual and buzzy. Definitely book ahead. Only regret was not saving room for dessert - guess we’ll have to go back.

Don’t forget to order: Bacalhau a brás (€18) - although the menu changes all the time

Even the sourdough and tremoços (beans in brine - often served with beers in the afternoon) were excellent. The photo we took of them, less excellent.
