Check out that picanha! Not featured - the black beans with chopped up bacon bits, which someone was eating with a spoon out-of-shot.
Apparently the average Lisboeta eats out between 5-7 times per week. This seemed high to us former Londoners - until we learnt more about Portuguese tasca culture. Tascas are the culinary backbone of this city, serving traditional meals at affordable prices, and most people will have their favourite. For us, that favourite is probably Tasquinha dos Grelhados. We’re creatures of habit and nearly always order the steak and black beans (picanha com feijão preto) or the baked cod (bacalhau assado). The baked cod is one of the very very best I’ve eaten, but they also had grilled sardines (sardinhas) on the menu last week and - yes please. Do: order a jug of vinho verde (it comes out of a vinho verde tap). Do: chat to the owner Nuno and try anything he recommends. Do: save room for dessert - go to the fridge and pick either a chocolate mousse or the molotof, a meringue-style pudding. You’ll eat, you’ll drink, you’ll have a lovely time, and you’ll probably spend €15 per person. Pop into Papillon, the craft beer bar opposite, and make a night of it.
Don’t forget to order: Picanha com feijão preto and a chocolate mousse for dessert (and if Nuno recommends putting a shot of something on it… maybe whisky?...go for it).
