Once again, we bring you a friendly hint about the joys of the Portuguese churrasqueira. Either in Anjos, or Estefânia, these cornerstones of the city ensure that you can walk in off the street and enjoy some grilled delights with simple side dishes, often for less than €10 a plate. As the summer warmth, makes way for the chillier Autumn, we made our way to one of the two Zubir Churrasqueira's in Lisbon. The halal chain has its original restaurant in Anjos, but we popped into the newer Alameda restaurant.

Like tascarias, we're always looking for that little something extra which helps elevate a churrasqueira above the rest and in the case of Zubir it is the truly exceptional chilli and spice. So many people come to Portugal hoping to indulge in a fiery peri-peri, only to learn that the Portuguese themselves are not so keen on the very spicy. But here at Zubir it packs a real pinch full of flavour. We certainly found the grilled chicken all the more delicious for it.
With one plate of peri peri ordered, we also sought to try the other main favourite of picanha steak. More commonly known as rump cap, Zubir served up a hearty portion of four expertly grilled slices. Each with glistening rendered fat, the juicy meatiness elevated further with the spicy chilli topping. An absurdly delicious steak dinner for just €12.
With each plate also coming loaded with rice and french fires, we also supplemented with a side of black beans, and also some chicken and bell pepper espetadas to try more of the menu. There was so much food we ended up taking a fair amount home with us. There is nothing more wrong-headed in this world than self-declared foodies in this world thinking cheap can't mean good. Head into Zubir and enjoy a great feast at truly affordable prices
Don't forget to order: Ask for their chilli sauce at the table
